Ecommerce Built-in Blogs vs. WordPress

A blog is a great way to improve traffic to your website. It can help you grow in search rankings, and improve people’s understanding of your products or services. WordPress is at the forefront of all blogging platforms, and they power around 24% of all sites on the internet. So how do the eCommerce platform’s built-in blogs stack up against WordPress? In this post, we’ll see what Volusion, Bigcommerce, and Shopify can bring to the table when compared to WordPress!

Volusion

Unfortunately, there isn’t going to be much to say about Volusion, as they do not offer a built-in blog. They instead encourage you to set up a WordPress blog on a sub domain of your site. This makes blogging with Volusion a little more difficult to set up initially than with other eCommerce platforms. Some Volusion store owners use Volusion’s article pages to create new posts, but this does not come with the features and SEO benefits of a full fledged blog. If you have a Volusion site and want a blog, your best bet will be to use WordPress or Blogger. Make sure you keep in mind that if you want your blog to match the design of your Volusion site, you will also need to have your design implemented for WordPress.

Bigcommerce

Bigcommerce offers a simple to use built-in blog, so you can start blogging straight away. While Bigcommerce does offer an uncomplicated process for their blog, with this simplicity comes limited features. You’ll find some good SEO features built into their blogging platform such as adding tags, editing page URL, and adding a Meta description to your individual posts. If your blogging needs reach beyond simple blog posts, anything more advanced, like content marketing would benefit from the additional features found on WordPress, where you can reap the full rewards of your endeavors.

Shopify

All Shopify stores come with a built-in blogging engine, making it the perfect way to start blogging with little hassle of initial setup. You can do all the usual activities like adding posts and putting up images, but Shopify also lets you do some more advanced things such as enabling, and moderating comments, managing multiple blogs, and bulk publishing and unpublishing your blog posts.

What WordPress has to offer…

WordPress offers simplicity for users and publishers, but also can be modified to fit your needs. You get access to hundreds of plugins that you can use to customize your blog anyway you deem fit. A WordPress blog will give you the most control of your blog from an SEO standpoint. If that is a priority for you, then setting up WordPress on a sub-domain could be a great solution.

Setting up a WordPress blog that matches the theme of your store can be more difficult than with the built-in blogging on your Ecommerce platform. Luckily, we here at Border7 Studios have designed and setup matching WordPress blogs for many of our clients, and would be delighted to talk with you about your unique blogging needs.
